Bridal Lashes On Your Wedding Day- here's what you need to know

"Should I wear lashes on my wedding day?" as a bridal makeup artist, this is one of the most common questions I get asked by my brides. And the answer? There is no right and wrong, every bride is different and its important to figure out what is going to work best for you. Below are some handy hints and tips on choosing what will be the best lash look for you:

Strip Lashes

Ah the humble strip lash! We have all been there back in the day, trying to re-glue a rogue lash back on in a nightclub toilet! Lashes have come a long way since then; there are now an endless choice to suit everyone- from long and fluttery, to winged out, to barely there to a half-lash, there is something for every type of bride.

If you have not previously worn a strip lash, it can sometimes take abit of getting used to, you might be able to initially see them in your peripheral vision, and at first it could feel slightly uncomfortable. But this usually settles after 20 minutes or so of wearing.

The benefits of strip lashes are you have a wide range of choice that can totally transform your look, and they are also multi-use if you look after them. Some of my most used bridal favourites are the iconic Ardell demi-wispies, Ardell Naked lashes and Kiss So Wispy.

Individual Lashes

My personal favourite for brides! These are tiny little fans of lashes that are applied on top of your own, giving a super natural, almost indetectable look. They can be tailored to suit your eyes with short, medium and long lengths to create shape and depth.

The great thing about individuals is that you won't even feel they are there so they are very comfortable, you won't have to worry about a lash hanging off, and nobody will know you are wearing them. They give you that 'your lashes but even better' look.

Lash Extensions

Lash extensions are great if you want something that is going to last you a long time, typically they can last upto 6 weeks if following the correct aftercare. This is a fab choice if you are a bride who is wanting something that will see you through until going away on honeymoon, and enable you to go makeup-free with confidence abroad.

Make sure you choose an experienced lash technician who will be able to deliver the look you want safely. If you are getting your makeup done on your big day, I would recommend speaking to your makeup artist beforehand if you are planning to have lash extensions as sometimes they can get in the way of makeup application if they are quite thick and not sitting flush to the lash line.

Lash Lift & Tint

Another option for the more natural brides out there is a lash lift and tint. This is essentially a 'perm' for your eyelashes which lifts and sets them holding more of a curl, giving the illusion of longer lashes. A tint finishes off the look nicely by making your lashes darker, therefore appearing fuller and thicker.

Again, do your research and ensure you get someone who can carry this out correctly, as all too often I have seen crumpled, squashed lashes rather than beautifully curled, which again can make your makeup artist's life difficult!

The Lash Lowdown

Ultimately, the lashes you choose are completely your own personal preference. At your trial your makeup artist will be able to chat through your options in more depth and help you decide which is the way to go. If you just want to wear mascara that is completely fine, however lashes tend to finish off your whole bridal look to perfection and make your eyes stand out beautifully in photos. The main things to think about are:

  • Do I want something long-lasting?

  • Is comfort a key factor?

  • Do I want a super natural, barely there look?

  • Do I want a fuller, more dramatic look to enhance my eyes?

  • Am I used to wearing lashes?

All are great options, but there is always one that will be the best choice for you! Happy lashing!!
